PDR Concept
Paediatric standers have long existed to assist children who are unable to maintain an upright position on their own. However, designs have not changed substantially in decades and are often centred around a complex steel framework. Stand is a concept created as a departure from traditional designs to embody a more comfortable and destigmatising approach.
We began our design process with input from our user-centred design team, who gathered research and held ideation sessions to dissect the user’s everyday situations such as playing, learning in a classroom and eating. It became clear that adaptability would need to be a key feature to enable use within these different scenarios. As such, we integrated the ability to easily attach accessories like work trays, and ensured that the design can adjust as a child grows so that it could serve over many years. We also made sure that the product was designed for easy assembly and to be flat packed for convenient transport.
Our in-house expertise in colour, material and finishing enabled us to apply a fresh approach for Stand’s aesthetic. By combining natural materials with a soft touch finish we created a contemporary layout that aims to reduce stigmatisation for users.
Our industrial design capabilities enable us to develop concepts and use 3D rendering to visualise them in order to turn ideas into tangible outputs. Through consistent iteration we are able to tweak the design, until we arrive at a concept that has the potential for manufacture.
Since its development Stand has received a Red Dot Concept award and as well as a German Design Award, in the category of Excellent Product Design - Medical, Rehabilitation and Health Care. The GDA panel described Stand as “combining comfort, function and safety in a friendly, clear, minimalist design that has a modern, high-quality appearance and helps to reduce inhibitions.” Of the win our Director Jarred Evans said the following:
"We’re very proud to help make a positive difference to the lives of young people with cerebral palsy through our work on Stand, and to receive recognition for our product from such a prestigious awards body."
