Introducing PDR’s new Digital Prototyping Lab

We’re very pleased to be sharing news that our new Digital Prototyping Lab is now operational! The lab was specifically designed to allow us to bring together the resources we have for prototyping high fidelity products and developing proof of concept electronics.

To find out more, we asked Senior Design Consultant Grahame Jones to explain more about this incredible new space for innovation.

“There is increasing demand for us to develop and evaluate electronics systems in the very early stages of product development. This lab allows us to create rigs which incorporate electronic functionality and adjust parameters and configurations to achieve the performance our customers require,” says Grahame.

“We can use the lab to prototype products with an electronics element so that we can define performance characteristics and take into account the additional potential requirements for things such as cooling, monitoring through sensors and applying timing systems.

“These are the elements we often take for granted in a lot of consumer and medical products, so having a dedicated lab for exploring this further is a fantastic development.”

As for the design, the main component is its adaptability.

“The challenges we have in product design consultancy are project-specific, so if a customer has a project idea, we can utilise the existing resources or bring specific tech in-house in collaboration with our network of sub-contractors and suppliers.”

This new space at PDR will help enhance our product development. “Specifically it will help with the decision making in the early stages of a project, defining performance and functionality. This in turn will hopefully lead to faster product development through enhanced prototyping and testing,” Grahame explains.

“We’re also increasing our electronics and programming prototyping resources, and we consulted with our team to identify and source the equipment we need to prototype effectively and safely.”

Although we had clear requirements of what we wanted for the lab’s design and specification, we were assisted in the layout and workshop furniture by Dura, a fellow Red Dot Design winner.

We’re looking forward to working on upcoming projects within the space and enhancing product development at PDR.
